Welcome to HGSS
Halton Gujarati Seniors Samaj also known as HGSS is registered, not for profit charitable Seniors Group. It was established to provide a forum for social interaction, entertainment and information sessions for Gujarati speaking seniors, residing in Halton, including Milton, Oakville, Burlington and surrounding areas.
It is the welfare of and for the seniors participating in the social, cultural and economic integration to help them to settle into Canada. In addition, the HGSS curriculum includes Government services, benefits and any information that helps to seniors orientate Canadian way of life. This in return, helps them to become participating members of Canadian society. Our Aim is to involve isolated seniors around Halton region, as a volunteer in the activities, enjoy companionship and find support with the many challenges of aging. Our vision is to serve the community and enable it to become a vibrant part of the wider Canadian society.
Gujarati speaking community has been settled in Canada for more than two generations, while others are new to the Canadian lifestyle. One of their cultural characteristics is their strong family bond, which has resulted in many younger immigrants to sponsor their parents. Many seniors with Gujarati linguistic background are retiring here along with the demographic shift in the wider Canadian context, adding to this growth is the class of sponsored, retired parents of the younger immigrants. This has created a growing need for these seniors to socialize and gain a wider experience of life in Canada.
Very well respected in our Gujarati community, the founder of Halton Gujarati Seniors Samaj are Mr. Natvarbhai Jagjivandas Patel, Bhikhabhai Mathuradas Patel and Jayantibhai K. Patel began as a group with other fifteen Senior Gujarati Community Members across Halton in the year 2014. They used to meet in the basements of their children to discuss their experiences in the new land in which they had migrated. Milton, Ontario is one of the fastest growing towns in North America and so many Gujarati families are moving to Milton. By word of mouth in the community many seniors became the member and now we have more than 100 members and we started renting rooms in the community Centres & Milton Facility Rentals. There was a transformation in the organization: a constitution was adopted which resulted in a democratic election of the executive committee. Teams were established with specific responsibilities and long-term planning was implemented. The formally registered organization, “HGSS – Halton Gujarati Seniors Samaj ” became popular because of the well-run meetings, trips, outings and annual functions that our committee/Volunteers members organized.
We have regular monthly meetings where the members hear presentations from the guest speakers about health, Senior’s Safety issues, learn and perform dances. We have outdoor activities such as picnics, trips to places such as GTA Temples to attend Cultural/Religious programs, River Boat Cruises, Ottawa Tulip Festival, visit Animal Zoo and continue monthly activities throughout the year. We strive for simplicity in structure and depend on teamwork, voluntary service, and donations to support our mandate. The result is a cooperative atmosphere where warmth and compassion are valued, and safety and respect for the individual is paramount. HGSS strongly support cultural diversity and inclusive participation.
